MGI METEOR DP60 PRO HELPS OLYMPUS PRESS EXPAND DIGITAL CAPABILITIES

Olympus Press, based in Seattle, Washington, has expanded their business into new digital markets with the addition of MGI’s Meteor DP60 Pro four-color, multi-substrate digital press.

Olympus Press, one of the largest independent printers in the Northwest, has been dedicated to producing the highest quality printed products since 1968. With a full range of in-house printing, finishing and fulfillment services, Olympus Press is a leader in Hi-Definition printing and is very strongly committed to environmental sustainability. They service many types of commercial accounts, ranging from small businesses to major US corporations.

While Olympus Press’ overall business remained strong, many of their clients were looking for digitally printed products to supplement their existing offset orders. Glenn Blue, co-owner of Olympus Press, began researching digital press options from the major manufacturers, an extensive process that took nearly 8 months and included multiple visits to demo centers and customer sites. Once he and his Production Manager had examined all the options, he Olympus Press made the decision to purchase a Meteor DP60 Pro multi-substrate digital press and EnvelopExpress envelope feeder from MGI.

“There are many excellent digital printers in the Seattle market, but we saw an opportunity with the Meteor DP60 Pro to provide a whole new range of digital services” said Blue. “The press offers so many unique digital capabilities that were a perfect complement to our existing offset. For example, our customers are used to a 40” sheet length, and the Meteor DP60 Pro’s extended sheet sizes allowed us to migrate many of those jobs to digital for shorter runs. We also really like the Meteor DP60 Pro’s laser-safe prints, as many of our customers rely on us for their letterhead, envelopes and business cards, which we can now also produce digitally with the same high quality color output that our customers expect.”

In addition to many traditional applications (brochures, catalogs, sell sheets, labels, etc.), Olympus Press now offers customers a wide range of applications on plastic and synthetic substrates, such as static cling and signage, along with pocket folders (printed on oversize sheets).

The Meteor DP60 Pro was also attractive to Olympus Press because of the no click charge philosophy, unique among digital presses. “We loved that we didn’t have to reconfigure our whole estimating & purchase system to accommodate a click charge,” added Blue.

Blue was also pleased with the ease of installation of the Meteor DP60 Pro, stating that “it was out of the box performance - we were in full production in less than a week. The unit’s small footprint meant that we didn’t need to make any facility modifications, nor did we need chillers or other HVAC accessories.”
